Cara's Castles
Goodrich Castle
Strong and imposing, Goodrich Castle was equipped with the most up to date defensive features, including drawbridges arrow-loops and two concentric curtain walls.
A French nobleman called William de Valence built much of what is still visible at Goodrich in the late 13th century. Valence's nephew was King Edward I (1272-1307), which meant he had powerful connections at court. However, Valence was not very popular with other nobles, who viewed him as a foreign upstart. Valence's rebuilding of Goodrich sent a powerful message that - like it or not - he was here to stay, that he was a cultured man with the highest connections and was not to be triffled with!
