Frequently Asked Questions
Crop Landing
Bottom landing field at the Devils Dyke as viewed
from a hang glider at an altitude of 300 feet - can
you see how deep the crop is? In this case it was 2
inches but it grows to 6 feet or more!

What do I do if I have to land in crop?
Firstly crop landings are not advisable. Number one you risk injury to yourself; number 2, it's a bitch getting the glider out afterwards, and number 3; you're likely to have an angry farmer coming after you!
Assuming you have no other choice, the safest way is to imagine that the top of the crop is the ground, even if the crop is 6 foot high or more! Flare there and drop straight down into the crop. From the air it can be very difficult to judge how deep the crop is, so always aim for the top.
If you try landing on the ground i.e. by ploughing into the crop, you risk the base bar being caught in the crop. If this happens, which is most likely to be the case, the glider will instantly nosedive into the ground and the resulting impact will be very heavy!
If you have landed in the crop you will need to leave the field in such a way to minimise any further damage. Don't drag your glider willy-nilly through the crop, try and find a path through the crop i.e. through the tracks left by a tractor.
