Devil's Dyke / Ditchling Beacon Loop

Daniel S and myself headed to the Devil's Dyke to repeat a ride I'd done over 10 years earlier. Arriving at the Dyke, the weather had closed in, thick with cloud and drizzle. It wasn't nice, so we quickly readied our bikes and set off.

Retracing the route from memory was almost impossible so I had to constantly stop and check the map and stop. In addition to that, I was also constantly having to stop to adjust my squeaking brakes! The first interesting bit was the lambs that congregated behind my bike as I checked the map.

After climbing towards Jack and Jill, Dan managed to snap his chain. During the repair the cloud lifted and the air cleared improving visibility. Finally it was nice to be able to see some of the scenery (shame I didn't take a camera with me!).

At Ditchling Beacon we stopped for Ice Cream then continued on our way. As we approached the A27 I succeeded in getting my chain stuck between the rear wheel spokes and the back block. With a bit of brute force that was remedied and we continued back towards the Devil's Dyke.

As we climbed our final ascent to the top of the Dyke, various people clapped their hands and congratulated us with "Well Done's". Being somewhat confused by this, it took a while to notice that the British Heart Foundation were running a cycle event and Daniel and I had been mistaken as competitors in this event!

Back at the Dyke I bumped into Ozzie, had a quick chat before retreating into the pub for a coffee and a pint!
